The Sankofa Bird pendant was made especially for Funky Frog by the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. The Sankofa Bird is 35 mm including loop. “Adinkra are symbols that represent concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics and pottery among the Ashantis of Ashanti Kingdom. Sankofa is a word in the Twi Language of Ghana that translates to “Go back and get it”. The proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which translates as: “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” is symbolized by the Adinkra Bird  looking back.  It is said the Sankofa Bird appears frequently in traditional art, and has been adopted as an important symbol in the African Diaspora to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. It is one of the most widely dispersed adinkra symbols, appearing in modern jewelry, tattoos, and clothing.”

The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors… back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! If you would like to see the intricate process check out the blog here …
