A strand of about 39 pink Sandcast Recycled Glass Beads strung on string 23" long. The beads are around 15x10 mm. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the coloured powder into molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a woodburning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. These beads were designed and made by a Contemporary Bead Designer, TET located near Accra. -

These beads vary in size as they are handmade. Each bead is around 17 mm long by 7 mm wide. Funky Frog acquired these beads directly from the small factory in Accra which hand makes them. -

The beads are handmade so will vary in size, shape and colour. After some research it seems these beads are probably Howlite a stone or gem in and of itself but also well known for its ability to be dyed and look like other stones/gems. Howlite is a stone of patience and perspective, for those who feel they need to slow it down, absorb, and clear the constant stream of chatter from the mind, it's a crystal that marries you to a more mindful way of life. So not 'real' turquoise' but still a treasure! -

During a Bead Hunt Funky Frog made a big order from the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! If you would like to see the intricate process check out the blog here ... While there we browsed and some fun beads and pendants already made that we found beautiful, caught our eye. These Crocodile Pendants are part of that batch. There are 4 different crocs to choose from.
