Large and small Brass Nugget beads … these make gorgeous accent beads.. one of a kind find! For generations a spectacular range of brass beads and pendants have been produced across Africa including small anvil-shaped nugget charms known as “Igbo bugs” popular among the Fulani. The tradition of metalworking in Africa is very much alive. And these nugget “Igbo bugs” type beads were produced for Funky Frog by the Metal Smiths in Kumasi, Ghana.” There are two sizes of nugget beads to choose from. -

The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! A gorgeous focal African Amber Bead in various sizes and colours for your own necklace design! Baltic Amber, a fossilized tree resin, has been prized and coveted for its colour and natural beauty since ancient times. Because this amber is relatively rare and therefore expensive, there have been many attempts to replace it with other natural and synthetic resins. Research by Angela Fisher (author of Africa Adorned) and others suggests that very little African "amber" is 'true' amber. Most is probably made in Europe and carved in Africa. Some may be Copal resin (young tree resin) that is formed into beads, some may be a blend of natural and manmade resins, and some may be made from phenolic plastic. Horn that is a byproduct has also been called African amber. Even hard wood has been use and then called 'African Amber'. Funky Frog loves all the various kinds of 'African Amber' beads for their own intrinsic beauty and worth. 8 different focal Beads to choose from! -
There is a small village, Kokofrom just outside Kumasi, Ghana where there are artisans who make lost wax brass beads in the same way as their ancestors. These brass disk were made for Funky Frog. The brass disks are great spacers and give the project something a bit different. These disks are about 1x16mm. They are handmade so will vary in size, shape and colour. The artisans use whatever scrap metal they can get their hands on from old taps to pipes to .. but they call it 'brass'. 10 disks / $7
