A strand of about 26 Translucent Glass with swirled Light Blue rectangular shaped Recycled Glass Beads on string 22" long. The rectangular beads vary in size but on average are 20x9mm. Ghana is famous for these recycled beads made from recycled glass bottles. These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. -
A Contemporary Bodom style Yellow Glass Bead with a silvery blue-grey swirled teardrop inlay made to look like Old Trade Beads. These were found in the Agboblushi Market in Accra ... the trader said they were from Abijhan, Cote d'Ivoire ... they remind me of fimo beads with a soft smooth feel .. the bead is round but squashed about 14x23 mm with a large almost 3mm hole .. the beads are handcrafted so will vary quite a bit in shape, size and pattern. You will receive on that looks like the beads in the photo. $3/bead -

In Africa, these Bodom beads are held in the highest esteem and usually only worn for celebrations, funerals, and are often buried with the dead. There is much folklore about their magical powers as well. These large bodoms have the evil eye. The belief in the ‘evil eye’ dates back thousands of years. It is one of the strongest symbolic symbols in the world. Wearing an evil eye as an amulet is believed to protect the wearer from evil forces. The evil eye has symbolism in practically every country in the world and every religion. Very powerful stuff! This Bodom Bead is a bicone and is 30mmH x 38mmW . This large bead is green with the 'evil eye' designs. The hole is about 5 mm. The bead has a rough, earthy, organic feel to it. A gorgeous barrel shaped bead 21 x 28 mm with a carved design that is brushed with a brick colour... Would make a beautiful pendant! Please note that these beads were handmade so each bead varies. You will receive one that is similar to the ones in the photo. If you get six beads the sixth one is free ! (so in actual fact only order five and i will put in the free one :) My affection for these beads grew when I heard that these 'Spindles' actually evolved into the beads they are today because of our avid collectioner's heart (all Beaders have one of those!) Originally these Spindles were actually made to spin cotton but then people started collecting them because they were so beautiful. They became rare .. so some enterprising people started making new ones but more as the beads they are today... They are so beautiful and evoke the country, Africa just by handling them and by the fact they are made of Africa's earth. -

There is a small village, Kokofrom just outside Kumasi, Ghana where there are artisans who make lost wax brass beads in the same way as their ancestors. I asked them to create some closures for Funky Frog and this was the most exotic one! Each half of the closure is about 35mm. The closures are hand made so will vary in size and shape. The artisans use whatever scrap metal they can get their hands on form old taps to pipes to .. but they call it 'brass'. -
During 2018 Bead Hunt Funky Frog made a big order from the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. These hooks and eyes were made especially for Funky Frog . The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! A strand of about 66 translucent soft grey Recycled Glass Beads strung on string 18" long. These beads are about 6mm. The beads are unpolished and natural. Photos don’t do these beads justice as they are translucent so it seems somehow the camera can’t quite catch them! They are handmade so colour, size and shape vary. These recycled glass beads were purchased straight from the small factory which hand crafts them using the methods of their ancestors, from crushing recycled bottles all the way to firing them in a wood burning oven. These small beads are the hardest to make as the smaller the bead is the easier it is to break. -

These recycled glass beads were purchased straight from the small factory which hand crafts them using the methods of their ancestors, from crushing recycled bottles all the way to firing them in a wood burning oven. -
A strand of 48 blue, brown and white rectangular Sandcast Beads on raffia 28" long. The beads are about 12x7 mm and are soft blue, brown and white layers with a rock like texture. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a wood burning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. -
