A gorgeous strand of 44 turquoise and black Fused Recycled Glass beads on string 20" long. These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory, TK Beads in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. These beads are made by recycling previously used beads, Ghana's answer to Fimo Beads! The beads are melted together in a clay oven to make this beautiful mosaic of colors. Each bead is approx. 12-13 mm. The beads are handcrafted so will vary in size, colour and shape. -

A strand of 107 small Sandcast Recycled Glass Beads strung on raffia 36" long. The beads are between 5-7x7 mm and are a mix of colours; green, yellow and red. These Sandcast Beads beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a woodburning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. -

A Contemporary Bodom style Yellow Glass Bead with a blue swirled teardrop inlay made to look like Old Trade Beads. These were found in the Agboblushi Market in Accra ... the trader said they were from Abijhan, Cote d'Ivoire ... they remind me of fimo beads with a soft smooth feel .. the bead is round but squashed about 13x22 mm with a large almost 3mm hole .. the beads are handcrafted so will vary quite a bit in shape, size and pattern. There is a small village, Kokofrom just outside Kumasi, Ghana where there are artisans who make lost wax brass beads in the same way as their ancestors. I asked them to create some closures for Funky Frog and this was the most exotic one! Each half of the closure is about 35mm. The closures are hand made so will vary in size and shape. The artisans use whatever scrap metal they can get their hands on form old taps to pipes to .. but they call it 'brass'. -
During 2018 Bead Hunt Funky Frog made a big order from the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. These hooks and eyes were made especially for Funky Frog . The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! A strand of about 66 translucent soft grey Recycled Glass Beads strung on string 18" long. These beads are about 6mm. The beads are unpolished and natural. Photos don’t do these beads justice as they are translucent so it seems somehow the camera can’t quite catch them! They are handmade so colour, size and shape vary. These recycled glass beads were purchased straight from the small factory which hand crafts them using the methods of their ancestors, from crushing recycled bottles all the way to firing them in a wood burning oven. These small beads are the hardest to make as the smaller the bead is the easier it is to break.
