Baltic Amber, a fossilized tree resin, has been prized and coveted for its colour and natural beauty since ancient times. Because this amber is relatively rare and therefore expensive, there have been many attempts to replace it with other natural and synthetic resins. Research by Angela Fisher (author of Africa Adorned) and others suggests that very little African "amber" is 'true' amber. Most is probably made in Europe and carved in Africa. Some may be Copal resin (young tree resin) that is formed into beads, some may be a blend of natural and manmade resins, and some may be made from phenolic plastic. Horn that is a byproduct has also been called African amber. Even hard wood has been use and then called 'African Amber'. A strand of various Vintage Glass Snake Beads strung on raffia about 32" long. There are large yellow Snake Beads about 7 x 7 mm. Slightly smaller thinner Red Snake Beads that are about 4x7 mm. Red snake Beads that start out small 4 mm and graduate up to a large Snake bead that is 10 x 10 mm. These are quite unusual. And lastly there are tiny flower shaped disk beads in brown. 3 strands of vintage Sandcast Recycled Glass Beads strung on raffia about 24" long. The beads are a real mix of colours and shapes. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass,, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a woodburning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. -
