The symbol of the Otuam, the figures carved on top of the chief's speaking staff, Peggy remembered, were a gun, a snail and a turtle. During her last visit there, she had asked Tsiami what those symbols represented. He had told her that they came from an old Ghanaian proverb that said a hunter in the bush wouldn't trouble himself with a turtle or a snail, peaceful creatures that stayed low and quiet on the ground. The hunter would shoot a lion or a rhino, powerful, aggressive creatures. The people of Otuam felt no shame in seeing themselves as the snail and the turtle. In fact, they felt it was a clear indication of their intelligence; snails and turtles would never be shot." -

The symbol shows two conjoined crocodiles, which symbolizes democracy and cooperation. The Adinkra symbol Sankofa is a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” The Akan believe the past serves as a guide for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future. These are a variety of the Sankofa as pendants found in the Bead Markets of Ghana, W.Africa during Funky Frog's many Bead Hunts over the years. -

A brass Adinkra Symbol pendant that is 36 x 38 mm including ring. This pendant was found at the Kokofrom Cooperative in Kumasi. Wikipedia says this about Adinkra Symbols: 'Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Ashanti, that represent concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and advertising. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features. Fabric adinkra are often made by woodcut sign writing as well as screen printing. Adinkra symbols appear on some traditional Akan goldweights. The symbols are also carved on stools for domestic and ritual use. Tourism has led to new departures in the use of the symbols in such items as T-shirts and jewelry. The symbols have a decorative function but also represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment. There are many different symbols with distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. ' This particular Adinkra Symbol, Fawohodie symbolizes 'indepenence, freedom or emancipation'.
