A strand of Kakamba Prosser Beads about 23" long. The glass beads are about 5 mm in diameter. These are great spacer beads. An assortment of colours. You will receive a strand similar to the strands shown. There are variations between strands. Prosser beads are by extension any beads made by the 'Prosser' technique, invented by the Prosser brothers in 1840 in England for the purpose of making buttons. The process consists of molding a cold paste under great pressure and then firing it. Prosser Beads were distinct from other European trade beads in that they were produced in a great variety of colors, and were also translucent. They were received particularly well in the town of Kakamba in the Republic of the Congo – hence the name Kakamba Prosser Beads. -

A large bracelet sized strand of about 12 extra large hand painted Recycled Glass Beads which is strung on string. The beads are about 30x16 mm and are a white and red Sandcast Bead with a Handpainted orange design. The beads are all handcrafted so will vary in colour, size and shape. The strand you will received will be similar to the photo but may have variations in colours. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a wood burning earthen oven. The beads are then hand painted and then refired. This is a beautiful extra large Looking Back Pendant handcrafted in Ghana, W. Africa. The Pendant is a whopping 4 x 3 1/2" . Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that means "Go back and get it" (San – go back; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take). The Sankofa symbol is one of the more popular and recognizable of the Adinkra symbols. The symbol is illustrated two ways; 1) by a bird with its head turned backwards retrieving an egg on its back, or 2) as a stylish heart-shaped design. The image of the mythological bird with its head looking backward is seen as a symbol of embracing one’s heritage or returning to a person’s roots. It reinforces the idea of community and family and using past experiences to help build a better future. The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! It is always a pleasure to go and see what new designs he has come up with in his small cottage industry in the outskirts of Accra.
